Anyone who has ever taken a class with me before will know of my love for creating Podcasts. So, when I found out this week we would be creating just that, I was pretty excited. The idea of a flipped classroom is that students can access the typical lecture materials beforehand so that the class time can be spent on hands on projects. Using the class time to apply the knowledge is a great idea because the instructor is there for assistance. The typical model is the reverse; the instructor is there for lecture not application.
The podcast I created introduces the students to explicit versus implicit text which was one of the topics in my lesson plan. The podcast introduces the two terms and leads the students through a practice activity. The great thing about this is that if a student does not quite understand, they can listen again. The podcast was created using BossJock for iPhone and uploaded to Dropbox.
The video I created was to serve as a rubric for the students’ presentations. I wanted to make it a little humorous because I feel like that gets their attention and helps the concepts sink in. I also wanted to challenge myself to create the entire project on my iPhone. I had attempted to do this before without success. This time I was able to do it. That includes all of the title slides and audio. I took video clips using the camera function of the phone. Then, I created title slides using an app called Poster Maker. I combined all of these in iMovie. Then I added audio from the app and did the voice over.
I enjoy creating things like this for my students. I think they also enjoy getting to see things like this when they are so used to paper and books all the time.
