Standard IV
Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
Reflection
Educators meeting this standard will foster a respect for appropriate use of digital information as well as teaching students how to appropriately cite their sources of used data. They ensure that all students can learn to work with emerging technologies by seeking out software and other tools that can be accessed at little to no cost to learners. This standard also asks educators to model to students what a good digital citizen is through teaching online etiquette and a respect for the cultures of others that they may have never encountered outside of the digital global community. The movie that I created concerns some of these topics. In that project, I showed students how to be respectful of their audience and the importance of not infringing on the copyrights of others. The podcast was an example of providing equitable access to learning materials, as it meets more learning styles that the typical written worksheet. Students who are audial learners would get much more from a podcast than from a handout. By being part of the forums on the website I created, the students can begin learning how to be good digital citizens. I am sure at some point the topic of online bullying or not respecting others’ ideas might come up and that would be a good learning opportunity. I would also use the forum as a way to teach those skills in a lesson.

Future Learning Goals
In the future, I hope to develop even better ways to teach my students that they are part of a larger community when they are online. I sometimes notice that students feel there is a way they behave at home versus how they can behave at school. It is my goal to teach my students that online etiquette and respect for the global community does not end at school. I want to foster an understanding in them that what they do online is the same whether at home or school. Most importantly, I want to teach them how to be safe when they are participating in discussions and other online activities.
- Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
- Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
- Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.
- Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.
